"Warm Bodies" - A Review

One Movie Poster

I have to admit – personally, I was really more than a little skeptical before I even entered the cinema theatre hall today. I suppose that it’s no secret to anyone that a tirade of critics and etcetera are making the film out to be another undead, cliché love story. Well, you can’t really deny the fact that the love story plot does exist, but honestly, to me, it doesn’t totally make up the entire storyline.

Anyway, the movie is basically about a conflicted, misplaced male zombie, R, wandering about all on his lonesome roughly eight years after the great ‘zombie apocalypse’. The remaining unaffected humans live together in armed seclusion, but they must venture out of their safety zone every so often to collect ‘resources’ from the external, zombie-plagued world.  The main bit thus begins when a human search party is ambushed by R and a group of zombies whilst raiding a clinic for some medicine. Two humans survive the attack – one out of sheer luck and the other simply because R - the supposedly-unfeeling male zombie - has ‘fallen for her’ and is therefore driven to protect her… After he gets his hands on her ex’s brains, that is.

Human Search Party - Julie (Main female progatonist) is the blonde.

Long story short - their ‘affection’ sparks something in the other zombies, and the zombies that aren’t too far gone start to feel something again – something alive. This displeases the ‘bone-ies’ - zombies who have completely lost their humanity and live to feast on a beating heart - and this results in a rapid conflict within the undead community. The poor confused humans are faced with the reality that not all ‘corpses’ are mindless, and, finally, the living and the ‘changing’ undead unite against the bone-ies that possess no hope of redemption, and the future seems bright and sunny with the hope of a completely undead-free era. Tell me, doesn’t that sound like a beautiful, totally heartwarming story?

Males and their helpful 'Best friend' advice

I kid, of course. It really was an enjoyable movie – R’s constant, unyielding inner monologue, the funky dead best friend that comes through for him all the time (literally), the semi-heartless blonde that falls slowly for the decaying male… I have to say, I’d probably catch it again if I had the time. And if it were free.

Remember to leave all logic at the door and prepare yourself for a zombie movie unlike any zombie ever created – it’s really a good movie to enjoy with your friends but you probably shouldn’t expect too much action or gore on your way in. It’s a totally kid-friendly movie (besides that one brain-eating scene) so look forward to some lighthearted laughs and an honestly amusing love-line.

Thank you so much for your time. I hope that you don’t find me too sardonic here and I’d really appreciate any of your thoughts or feedback at @NatKathXo (on twitter) or at Ordinarysgkid@hotmail.com J
